Accident
As a young man about 19 years of age, named John Green, residing im Whip-street, Habergham Eaves, was employed in some operation about what is technically termed the "Devil," at Mr. Tunstill's mill, Goodham-hill, Burnley, his left arm was caught by the machinery, and was so seriously injured as to render amputation necessary. The poor fellow had a brother so extremely hurt at another mill, in February last, as to cause his death in about a week; and the mother is a widow in indigent circumstances. We are sorry to add that several surgeons refused their assistance to the individual who was injured on Thursday, "unless they could be insured of being paid for their trouble;" in consequence of which a subscription was raised in the afternoon among the poor of the neighbourhood amounting to seven or eight shillings, to procure the required assistance. Really, do we live in a land of Christmas, professing a belief in Him "who went about doing good, healing all sorts of sicknesses among the people"?
