The Leeds Mercury
Saturday 29 March 1823
On Monday week, aged 29, under circumstances truly awful, Mrs. Moore, wife of Mr. James Moore, of Lancaster, attorney-at-law, and daughter of Mr. Phy?is, of Burnley. Her death was occasioned by her clothes taking fire. She was sitting with her feet upon the fender, nursing her child, only five weeks old, when an ignited coal flew out upon the rug, and set fire to the lower part of her dress, which being very light, was almost instantly in flames. In this situation she called out for assistance. A person going past saw her situation, and burst into the house. At that time her dres throughout was in a complete blaze. The carpet was thrown over her, but it still became necessary to throw a quantity of water upon her before it was extinguished. Her stays and the greater part of her dress was burnt to a cinder; and, as may be concluded, her body was in a dreadful condition. From the first, the medical men called in, gave her no hopes whatever. Fortunately she had put the infant upon the table, when she found her situation, and thus the little innocent escaped the fate of its unhappy parent.
