POPULAR HEADMASTER.
INTERESTING PRESENTATION AT ST. JAMES’S SCHOOL.

At the close of school on Thursday afternoon, a pleasing ceremony took place, when Mr. P. Leaver, the headmaster, was the recipient of a beautiful inlaid mahogany time piece, subscribed for by the members of the staff and the scholars, to mark the near completion of his 25 years service as headmaster of the school. Mr. J. F. Reid, the senior assistant, in making the presentation, spoke of the high regard in which the headmaster is held by all of them, and expressed good wishes for his future.

Mr. Leaver, in acknowledging the gift, said he had been taken entirely by surprise that afternoon, and he thanked them, one and all, for that beautiful present, which betokened their sincere respect for the goodwill towards him. He was glad that such a kindly feeling pervaded the school, and it was that spirit which made all of them so happy in their work.

The proceedings closed with hearty cheers for Mr. Leaver, at the call of James Nuttall, one of the top boys of the school.

Mr. Leaver came to St. James’s in August, 1891, and during the tenure of office, has seen many changes of an educational character in the town. In addition to his duties as head master of the day school, he was for a period of 10 years, headmaster of St. James’s evening school.

Many pupil teachers and assistant teachers (some of them afterwards head-teachers) have received their training at his hands, and many of his “old boys” are holding important positions in various parts of the country to-day. The school has given its fair quota to the “fighting forces” and over 100 names are already enrolled on the school’s roll of honour.
