Ancient Coins, Armour, &c.
A correspondent at Burnley informs us that Mr. Anderton, the lessee of the canteen, has in his possession a scalping knife, which belonged to the famous Indian chief, known by the name of the "Black Hawk," which he obtained whilst resident in America. He has also a pair of gauntlets, worn by Sir William Compton, at the taking of the Collegiate Church of Manchester, during the reign of Henry VIII. He has likewise a dagger, which has dountless belonged to one of the ancient Druids, as is evident by a comparison with the engravings in the Pictorial History of england. In addition to these curiosities, he has a dress sword, worn during the time of Ethelbert, which was taken from the sepulchre of a warrior interred in that reign, which was but a short one, namely, six years, from A.D. 860, to 866. And, to add to the interest of his collection, he has some fine specimens of Grecian and Roman coins, one of them of the reign of Nero, and another of the date of the Christian Neroo. Our correspondent states that he is induced to request the insertion of this notice, not less from the pleasure than the suprise he experienced at finding such a collection of rarities at the canteen of a barracks.
