Fatal Accident
An inquest was held at the Towneley Arms public-house, in Cliviger, on Saturday last, on the body of a man who was found dead in the highway. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased, whose name was John Fletcher, was a driver in the employ of Mr. John Whitworth, cotton manufacturer. When the melancholy accident occurred, he was on his return from Burnley where he had been for some machinery. He was seen about six o'clock passing through the bar at Cliviger, in a state of intoxication, with a waggon and three horses. He was found shortly after lying in the road upon his belly, and the wheel of the waggon appeared to have passed over his back. The waggon and horses were standing a few yards in advance. He was taken to the Towneley Arms, where he died about nine o'clock. Verdict, "Accidental Death."
