Fatal Accident
An inquest was held on Saturday last, at the Ram Inn, Cliviger, on view of the body of a railway labourer, named Wm. Burrows, aged 22 years. On the previous Thursday evening, deceased was employed filling a waggon with earth, which had fallen from the side of a cutting twelve or fourteen feet deep; and whilst thus engaged an immense mass of earth suddenly detached itself from a perpendicular face above the slope, on perceiving which the deceased attempted to spring out of the way, but, unhappily, he fell with his back against the waggon, the whole weight of the falling mass descending on the lower parts of his person. On being extricated, he complained of excruciating pains in his belly, and one of his legs. He was immediately carried to the Ram Inn, where he was attended by a surgeon, who continued him till his death, which occurred a few hours later the same evening. The poor fellow was a native of Copnall, near Crewe, Cheshire, and had only been engaged by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company on the previous Tuesday. -Verdict, "Accidental death."
