Destructive Mill Fires In Lancashire.
Last evening Orchard Mill, Padiham, near Burnley belonging to Mr, James Hitchon-Whittaker, was the scene of a disastrous fire. The premises consist of a weaving shed containing nearly 700 looms; a spinning mill, three stories high, containing 17,000 spindles; a smaller spinning mill adjoining, in which were 8,000 spindles, together with preparation-rooms. The mills were closed about six o'clock last evening, and at about half-past seven flames were seen issuing from the story of the larger spinning mill, which is one of the most substantially built in the town. Notwithstanding the efforts of the combined brigades of Burnley and Padiham, the flames spread with rapidity, and the roof fell in about an hour from the commencement. The fire quickly descended into the room below; and at the time this telegram was despatched (10.50), the spinning mill was in a fair way of becoming a complete wreck. There was a probability of the weaving shed being saved. The origin of the fire is unknown. The damage will amount to about £12,000 or £l5,000, which is covered by insurance.
The next paragraph relates to a story of a fire in Bury which I have not bothered to transcribe.
