Signs of the Improvement of Trade
Perhaps few towns in the kingdon suffered more from the pressure of the times than Burnley during the year 1842, and few enjoy a larger share of the prosperity of trade than that town at the present moment. As one proof of the improvement of the condition of the operative classes, we may state that all the various benefit societies, including the different Lodges of Independent and Union Odd Fellows, the Royal Foresters, Ancient Druids, and other sick and burial clubs, intend having a grand procession on the 24th of June, (the festival of St. John the Baptist,) it being six or seven years since they had a similar demonstration.
