Shooting Match.
On Tuesday last, a shooting match took place near the Duke of York Inn. The match was for a sweepstake of 5s. each, and a purse of gold given by Mr. Lawrence Brown, of the Duke of York Inn. The following are the names of the gentlemen who entered:- Messrs. Sanderson, L. Brown, Sutcliffe, Birley, and Iveson; Sanderson and Iveson each killing their own birds; after which a match was made between Mr. Sanderson and Mr. Lawrence Brown, at three birds each, which was won by Mr. Sanderson, who killed his birds, Mr. Brown only killing two. A circumstance in connection with this affair is perhaps worthy of especial mention, viz., Mr. W. Parker, publican, and late sergeant of the police force, was engaged to collect the sweeps, amounting to 25s. When it came to be wanted, Mr. Parker discovered, with consternation, that some kind hand had lightened his pocket of the amount. His discomforted appearance was greatly enjoyed by his friends, who were quite amused at the idea of an ex-policeman being so dexterously "cleaned out" by some sharper, more especially as not the slightest clue could be obtained twards the discovery of the delinquent.
