Death of a child from Chewing Lucifer Matches.
On Monday, an inquest was held at the Buck Inn, Cliviger, near Todmorden, on the body of Mary Simpson, aged one year and ten months. The child's mother stated that about four o'clock on the Friday previous, Martha Barker, a neighbour, brought the child home from her house. She said the child had been "throwing," and asked the mother what it had been eating, when she replied that it had had rabbit pie for dinner. It continued to vomit at intervals until a little before five o'clock, when the symptoms became much worse. It was then ascertained from an elder brother that the child had been eating lucifer matches, and the mother immediately went to Dr. Schofield, of Todmorden. He ordered her to give it some castor oil and some mint tea, and in the meantime to send to him for a bottle of medicine. She did so, but the vomiting continued until five o'clock on Saturday morning, when the child died. It was afterwards discovered that the deceased had chewed the ends of twelve matches, some completely and others partially off. This was done before ten o'clock on Friday morning. A verdict was returned "that the deceased died through accidentally eating lucifer matches."
