Murder and Suicide at Burnley
A murder of a particularly brutal and callous nature was discovered at Burnley on Wednesday. A man and woman named John Eastwood and Lizzie Longstaffe, both of whom were married persons, had been living together for some time past, and had visited Blackpool, Southport, and other places. On Saturday they removed to a house in Cog-lane, Burnley. On Wednesday morning, as the woman Longstaffe was not seen about as usual and the blinds were still drawn, suspicions were aroused, and ultimately the neighbours managed to look through the windows and there saw the woman lying on the bed apparently dead. The police were informed, and entrance being obtained, it was found that her throat was cut. The bedclothes were saturated with blood, and there was a pool of blood on the floor. Later in the day the body of Eastwood was pulled out of the canal, and the police have no doubt that he first murdered the woman and then committed suicide.
