Explosion in a Pit Near Burnley

An explosion of gas took place at Rowley Pit, Burnley, yesterday. The accident happened at the ginny head, about 350 yards from the shaft. The place had been inspected two hours before by the fireman, who saw no indication of gas. One of the men went to the ginny head with a naked light and immediately afterwards saw a blue blaze, and the explosion quikly followed. Little damage was done to the pit, but three men were injured, two seriously. The pit belongs to the executors of Col. Hargreaves.

I have read in another article that said much the same, that the fireman was Robinson Pollitt.
