Saturday 6 December 1851

On the evenings of yesterday and this day week, Miss Lester, attired in the Bloomer costume, lectured in the Court House, Burnley, on the advantages of the Bloomer dress. On Friday evening there was a full house, the men going for the fun of seeing a woman in breeches, whilst the majority of the females present were dressmakers, who no doubt had an eye to business. The present style of woman's dress was cried down in no faint terms by Miss Lester, whose appearance in trousers did not add to that gentleness which should ever accompany a woman. Her remarks, which were gathered from Lady Morgan, Mrs. White, and other writers, were given in a clear voice, with stage intonation, and told admirably on the audience. Though the prevailing style of female costume does want altering, yet we think the Bloomer dress is not quite the thing, for it has an unfeminine appearance with it, which will ever make it objectionable to men as well as to women of sense.
