Preston Guardian Saturday 31 October 1846 Fire An alarming fire took place the other day at Mr. Bracewell's farm, near Burnley. The military, consisting of several companies of the 56th Regiment, under the command of Major Norman, in conjunction with the Barrack Fire Brigade, under the superintendence of the sergeant of that company, were soon on the spot, and used the greatest diligence and promptitude to extinguish the fire, which, by some means, had made its way through the centre mow of hay in the barn. This hay the military and police dragged out as speedily as they could, - parts of the roof having to be taken off for the purpose. A considerable quantity of hay has been burned, and otherwise injured. The officers and men of the 56th Regiment deserve every praise; some of whom, during their exertions to save the property, were fully exposed to the water-pipes playing upon the hay in the barn. The amount of damage is not yet ascertained. |
