Post subject: | Textile Mill To Close - 1956 |
The Times Thursday October 25 1956 Textile Mill To Close Notices were posted in the largest textile mill at Brierfield, near Nelson, Lancashire, to-day announcing to the 300 workers that the directors had decided to cease production because of the "ever-increasing imports of duty-free textiles" into this country. Mr. John M. Dyson, managing director of Brierfield Mills Ltd., said to-night that, although during the past eight years £100,000 had been spent on modern spinning equipment and automatic looms, it had been found impossible to compete with the cheap imports. The displaced workers will each receive one week's additional pay provided they are on the books when the mill finally "weaves out." |
