The Towneley Audit

The half-yearly audit of the numerous tenantry holding lands, farms, tenements, &c., under Mr. Towneley, of Towneley Hall, was held this week, and the tenantry dined at the Hall Inn, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday last. The tenantry from Hapton dined on the first day, and numbered 59; Cliviger, &c., on the second day, when 147 partook of the good things of this life; and 134 from other townships on the third day; numbering altogether 340 of the bold, loyal, and patriotic sons of England. Need we add that, in accordance with the custom of the "olden time," the table were well supplied with the substantial food of the country - "roast beef and plum pudding" - and that there was a profusion of viands and luxuries not surpassed on any preceding occasion. Indeed, Mrs. Bottomley, the present worthy hostess of this ancient inn, catered with her accustomed tact, and all were well satisfied with the entertainment afforded, and the attention paid to them. On the last evening this audit closed with a grand ball, when the country yeomanry and farmers or their sons danced with the lovely damsels of their choice, and many of the young tradesmen of Burnley "tripped it on the light fantastic toe" with the girl who had won, or seemed to have won, his heart. We ought to add that the rents were never more freely paid; and, as one proof of the kindly felling subsisting between the Towneley tenantry and their successive landlords, we may state that many farms have been held by the same families for the last two and three centuries, and some for a longer period.
