DEATH OF MR JAMES PROCTOR OF STONEYHOLME
The ranks of those who were born in Burnley in the early part of the century are growing thinner and thinner. Mr James Proctor, who died in Stoneyhole on Saturday last, was a very prominent instance. He was born near Lane Head, in 1809, and would have completed his 90th year next July. We believe that he first saw the light in a small cottage, one of a group, then known as “ Gibraltar”. Later on he removed to one of another group then known as "Malta”. This circumstance gave point to many a joke in his after life in which Mr Proctor humourously posed as a foreigner.
Mr Proctor, almost from his earliest years was connected with the Ebenezer Baptist Chapel, and we believe his name remained on the list of deacons up to his death. For along course of years he was employed as cloth-looker first at Barnes’s, and latterly at the firm of Ogle and Kay, Curzon street mills. It is now 30 years since he retired from active work.
Mr Proctor was known as a quiet but vigorous politician. As a Borough and County voter he was a devoted supporter of Mr Gladstone and a creditable specimen of sturdy Nonconformist Liberalism. He lost his wife 39 years ago and remained a widower to his death
