Alarm of Fire
About twelve o'clock on Friday night, the 12th instant, the workshop of Mr David Pickard, spindle maker, Calder-street, was discovered to be on fire. The engines were soon on the spot, but the fire was extinguished before they could be got into operation.
Serious Accident at Burnley
On Monday last, as Mr. Geo. Haworth, corn dealer, Blackburn, was standing at the door of the Thorn Inn, Burnley, the wind blew the large sign-board from its fastenings, which, falling upon him, severely injured his skull. Medical assistance was immediately called in, and after due examination it was thought best to remove him to his residence, and he was accordingly conveyed to Blackburn in the afternoon.
Accident
On Sunday morning last, about half-past nine o'clock, an individual was rescued from a watery grave by the exertions of Thomas Brierley, who was for many years a boatman. The person in question, who was a studious man, was reading a book, when he was seized with a fit of epilepsy, and fell into the canal. Several persons ran to his assistance, but, upon Brierley coming up, he immediately jumped into the water with his clothes on, (although the water was ten feet deep), and fairly pulled him out, he appearing to be quite dead. He was, however, taken home, and medical assistance being at once obtained, he was resuscitated, to the no small surprise and joy of his relatives and friends. This is the third person whom Brierley has saved from drowning.
