On Burnley Market 54 Years
A well-known figure on the Burnley Market, Mrs. Mary Metcalfe, who, with her husband, Mr. Robert Metcalfe, carried on a drapery business, has been removed from our midst. Mrs. Metcalfe, who was 70 years of age, passed away at 19, Gordon-street, on Friday of last week. For 54 years she had been engaged in shop work on and in the neighbourhood of Burnley market. Before her marriage she was a Miss Roberts, and assisted her parents at their business centre. Mr. and Mrs. Metcalfe celebrated their golden wedding about 12 months ago. Beside her husband she leaves eight children. The funeral took place on Wednesday, interment being at Burnley Cemetery. Service was conducted at the house by the Rev. B. Winfield, Vicar of St. James. There was a large attendance. The floral tributes were as follow:- Wreath, from husband and family; Bob, Ephas, Winnie and Jim; cross, Selina and family; anchor, Alice Ann and Dick; harp, Jenny and Tom; harp, Mary and Dick; heart, Miss J. Roberts; harp, Bob, Nelly, and Will Roberts; cross, Mr. and Mrs. Parker and family; wreath, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wilding.
