The Water Supply at Burnley

The water was turned off in Burnley at two o'clock on Thursday, and from that time until 12 o'clock on Friday not a drop of water was supplied to the inhabitants for any purpose whatever. This is the first time such a thing has been known in the history of Burnley; but this action will be repeated daily until a further supply of water is available. There is only some eight or ten days' supply in stock. The ordinary daily consumption of water in the town is about 1,400,000 gallons, and the supply available from the streams is about one-third of this quantity. This includes the supply which is being bought from Thursden Valley, the pipes for which are being now laid down. When therefore the worst comes, the town will have about one-third its normal supply of water. There was a little thunder in Burnley on Thursday and a slight fall of rain, but nothing to affect the reservoirs in the slightest degree.
