Presentation of Model Cloaks to Factory Girls

On Saturday last, a number of young women from each of the mills in Padiham were invited to take tea with several ladies of the town and neighbourhood at Gawthorpe Hall, the seat of Sir J.P. Kay Shuttleworth, Bart. After tea, Sir James, in addressing the company stated that he had many years ago resolved that he would endeavour to introduce amongst the operative females a serviceable cloak or outer garment, for the purpose of protecting them from the inclemencies of the weather, whilst going to and returning from that factories; this he was now trying to carry out. Before coming away each young woman was presented by the worthy baronet with a cloak. They are made like the ordinarymantle, with a hood for the purpose of protecting the head. If the scheme succeed, a cloak club will be formed, to which Sir James, as well as the cotton manufacturing firms, it is understood, will subscribe, so as to enable the operatives to obtain them at but little cost to themselves.
