Burnley Express and Advertiser November 24, 1917 Briercliffe Driver and His Coal At Todmorden Court on Thursday, James Brierley, locomotive driver, Briercliffe, was summoned for emitting dense black smoke from his locomotive. He objected to his steam wagon being designated a locomotive. Evidence was given by two police-officers and a special constable, that on the 13th inst., defendant was driving a steam wagon up Burnley-road, Towneley, and it emitted such dense black smoke for more than a hundred yards, and nothing could be seen but darkness. Defendant blamed the coal. He said only Welsh coal did not cause black smoke, and they could not get it. He was fined 10s., and the special constable was allowed 4s. |

I have looked for him on the 1901 but cannot find him in Briercliffe. There are two who could be him in the 1911 Burnley aged 19yrs and 42yrs--I suppose either could be him. There are a cart load in Oldham/Rochdale I wonder why he was in court in Todmorden and not Burnley if he was on Burnley Rd Towneley? |
