Burnley Express and Advertiser November 14 1917 Shocking Nelson Accident Girl Killed: Brother Injured Fall From Footbridge Yesterday, about 4-30, a shocking accident occurred at Messrs. Crabtree and Elliott's Victoria Mill, Nelson, resulting in the death of EMily Presland, 14 years of age, daughter of Thomas W. Presland, a painter, of 52 Bracewell-street, Nelson, and serious injuries to her brother, William Alfred, aged 18. It appears that during the afternoon the girl, who was employed as a card cutter at the Victory Gum Works, went to the mill to see her brother, who worked in the warehouse. They were subsequently seen standing on a footbridge, which leads from the warehouse to the office, and it is presumed they were leaning against the hand rail when it gave way, precipating them to the ground 13 feet below. The girl sustained a fractured skull, and must have been killed instantaneously. Her brother was picked up in an unconscious condition, and found to be suffering from severe injuries to the head and a twisted neck. He was conveyed home in the ambulance van. |
