I was happy to be the bearer of cheering news to a Burnley woman who long before this war started knew the now common sadness and anxiety which separation from a soldier-husband on overseas service brings. Mrs. Ellerton, of 23, May-street, Burnley Wood, has not seen her husband, Colour-Sergeant Frank Ellerton, for five years; but on Monday night she will have the great pleasure of hearing his voice. In the "Greetings from Ceylon" programme on the Forces wavelength at 10-15 he will send her and her little son and daughter a message.
"I feel as if I'd been left some money," were her first words on hearing from me that her husband was to speak to her. She told me that he had been in the Army for the past 15 years, for most of which time he served in India. Five years ago he came home on leave before going to Palestine where his regimeny were going to deal with the Arab disturbances. Since then he has not been home. While he has been away he has lost his father and his grandfather and grandmother. His mother lives at 188, Branch-road. She, too, Mrs. Ellerton told me, would be delighted to know that her son was to speak to them on the radio.
