Riding Without Reins

Thomas Fielding, a carrier, was charged by P.C. John Hartley, with riding without reins, on Monday evening, the 17th. The police officer stated that he found the prisoner riding in his cart near the Boggan Bridge, on the Burnley and Todmorden Road, when Fielding said that he as merely riding to ease the horse, as he had removed a very heavy box to the back part of the cart. At this stage in the proceedings, Mr. Superintendent McCabe handed a note to the bench, by which it appeared that Police Serjeant Heap had written to Police Serjeant Ashworth, to try to influence or bias the case. Mr. McCabe severely censured Heap, and the bench joined in the censure; and Mr. Stansfield said, that is the note had been from a private individual, it would have had some attention paid to it; but coming from one police serjeant to another, they could only regard it as an attempt to defeat the ends of justice. Mr. McCabe said the serjeant should be reported to Captin Woodford. The court decided that Fielding should be fined 3s. 4d., and 9s. costs.
