I am related to Major Wemyss Thomas Cockburn 1800 - 1856 although there may well be other relatives by this name. The names of Wemyss - Charteris - Lennox - Rosslyn - Erskine - Manners - repeat down through the centuries and maybe they are merely the naming of a child after a hero of the day --- or are we connected in some way? As yet we cannot find the connection. Our earliest ancestor is Lt Col James Cockburn - Royal Artillery who was married to Charlotte Stuart in 1787 at St Marys Whitechapel London. They had 7 children one of whom was Wemyss Thomas Cockburn.

Ultimately, in Port Macquarie NSW Lt Wemyss Thomas Robert (or Rawdon) Cockburn 1829-1868 married 1860 Emmeline Sidney Murphy 1842-1933. They had 2 sons survive: Wemyss Stuart Hartley Cockburn 1862-1889; and Lennox Manners Charteris Cockburn 1865-1926. And we are happy to share information, photos and certificates.

The murder at Burnley was fascinating. Thank you.

We would love any information.

Thanks Mel, I will get the hang of this eventually.

If the ancestors were transported to Australia there are a few OLD TV series made here that although dated - are quite useful in filling in the background and atmosphere. Although the acting is a bit stiff by today's standards - the story lines have actually got some accuracy to them. And there are some more recent shows too:

The Timeless Land
Against the Wind
Sara Dane

Hanging Gale
To the Ends of the Earth
