A Man Drowned At Extwistle

A thunderstorm, which in the locality of Briercliffe and Extwistle compared with the disastrous one of the 5th July, 1881, passed over that hilly district on Sunday, and was, unfortunately, fatal in its effects. The rain fell in torrents and the streams in the vicinity were swollen to such an extent that the passing through Runklehurst Wood, Extwistle, carried away a footbridge. In the evening two men, one (Alfred Duerden, about 22, a weaver) married, with two children, passed though the wood on their way home from Roggerham. Duerden's companion had occasion to remain behind as they neared the place where this footbridge was supposed to be, and on coming up a few minutes later was astonished and alarmed to find his friend missing. He reported the circumstance, after making a personal search, to the villagers, but no trace of the missing man could be discovered that night. On Monday morning, however, about eight o'clock, his dead body was found about half a mile lower down the stream, the coat having stuck fast to a tree stump. On Wednesday an inquest was held at Briercliffe, when the jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally Drowned."
