Burnley Express Wednesday 22 May 1901 Theft of a Watch and Chain Herbert Harwood (19), a farm servant, appeared in answer to a charge on remand of stealing one gent's silver lever watch from Burwain's farmhouse at Briercliffe betwee 5:45 and 7 a.m. on the 13th May last, the property of Bannister Kippax, and valued at £4. -Prosecutor, who is a farmer at Briercliffe, deposed to the watch being his property, and said it was worth £4. Prisoner had worked for him as a farm servant, and on the 13th May last witness remembered getting out of bed at five o'clock and going into the fields for the cows. Before doing so he placed the watch and imitation gold chain on the table in the house where they lived. When prosecutor went out in the morning he left prisoner in bed. Kippax returned from the shippon about 6:45 a.m. and missed the watch and chain, besides 7 1/2d. in copper. -Prisoner denied having seen the money. -Clayton Holt, pawnbroker, Padiham, said prisoner pawned the watch at his shop on the 13th May, and he advanced him 12s. upon it. Harwood telling him that the watch belonged to him. -The prisoner appeared to have a particular liking for watches, as he had previously stolen one at Heywood, and another on the 28th March at Nelson. -The magistrates sent him to prison for two months with hard labour. |
