Marsden in 1765
The following copy of "an assessment for the necessary relief of the poor, and for the other purposes in the several Acts of Parliament mentioned relating to the poor for the township of Marsden, in the county of Lancaster, made and assessed the second day of May, 1765, being the first rate for this present year, at 3d. in the pound," will be of interest to a considerable number of our readers. It offers an interesting contrast to the present valuation of the township. The document does not state what period of time the rate was expected to cover, but the occupiers of premises mentioned in the list below will be able to form a comparison between the past and present value of the buildings. By multiplying by six the amount which the rate realised it will be seen what the poor rate would have amounted to at its present rate of 1s. 6d. in the pound, in 1765. A comparison between this amount and the rate just levied on the township will represent the past and present value of the premises. The document is also of interest in showing what families were established in Marsden 125 years ago. The following is the list:-

The rate is assessed by J. Ridehalgh and George Halstead, churchwardens, and Joseph Whalley and James Rushton, overseers of the poor. It was also "seen and allowed by us, two of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said county, witness our hands this 10th day of May, 1765, J. Clayton, A. Nowell." "This was published in the church on Sunday, the 12th of May, 1765, by me, Richard Farrar, clark." The document is in the handwriting of John Ecroyd, who was surveyor of highways in 1771. Mr. W. Ecroyd, jun., makes a calculation (in answer to a footnote on the document made by the late Mr. William Ecroyd, of Lomeshaye), showing that if the above assessment was at 3d. in the pound upon half value, the rateable value of the township of Marsden in 1765 would appear to have been £2,318 10s. It is now over £64,000.
