Refusing To Maintain A Mother

Jonas Lee was charged with refusing to maintain his mother, Sarah Lee, who was old and infirm, and chargeable to the Township of Briercliffe with Extwistle. She was paid 2s. 6d. a week. The defendant is a servant man at Southfield House, and had 16s. a week. He is a widower and has children, but none depending upon him for support. It appeared that an order had been made upon him last year for the maintenance of his mother, but it had never been served. Mr. Hartley appeared for him, and stated that he had a daughter and child to maintain; it appeared, however, that the daughter was married and that her husband lived somewhere in Marsden, or had done recently. The bench made an order for him to pay 2s. a week.

I never realised you could be made to support your parents! I'm guessing it doesn't still apply (and if it does, please don't tell my mother)
