Wednesday June 13, 1917

Briercliffe

To Pay Costs.- At Reedley, on Monday, James Kippax, 16 Acre-street, Briercliffe, pleaded guilty to a breach of the Lighting Order at his home on May 19th, and was ordered to pay the costs. It was stated that on Saturday, May 19th, at 11-45 p.m., an incandescent light, seen through the window of defendant's house, illuminated the vicinity for a distance of 40 yards. -Defendant said he forgot to close the curtains.

I found this intriguing - especially as I live in London where it is never ever really dark! I loved his excuse.

Does anyone know anything about the history of lighting orders? I had a quick look using google but didn't find anything of note.

Ooops another one of mine. When they lived there they had to go down to Lane Bottom for water and carry it back up the hill.
