The Burnley News Wednesday June 13, 1917 Briercliffe To Pay Costs.- At Reedley, on Monday, James Kippax, 16 Acre-street, Briercliffe, pleaded guilty to a breach of the Lighting Order at his home on May 19th, and was ordered to pay the costs. It was stated that on Saturday, May 19th, at 11-45 p.m., an incandescent light, seen through the window of defendant's house, illuminated the vicinity for a distance of 40 yards. -Defendant said he forgot to close the curtains. |

I found this intriguing - especially as I live in London where it is never ever really dark! I loved his excuse. Does anyone know anything about the history of lighting orders? I had a quick look using google but didn't find anything of note. Ruth |

Ooops another one of mine. When they lived there they had to go down to Lane Bottom for water and carry it back up the hill. |
