Refusal to Inter an Unbaptised Child
On Saturday afternoon, the Rev. E. Spooner Hoole, incumbent of Briercliffe Church, refused to read the burial service over an unbaptised child. The funeral party waited for the clergyman for twenty minutes, but Mr. Hoole never came although he had been personally notified of the funeral. The sexton then inquired if the child had been baptised, and, on being informed that it had not, he told the parents that it was no use waiting, as the vicar would not read the service over it on that account. The child was then buried without any service.
