Green Head House

At the head of Fence Lane, in the Forest of Pendle, stands Green Head House, a substantial built stone house, which has the reputation of being haunted. A lady friend of mine who was nurse to one of the Grimshaw's, who resides here, having often averred that she has seen a lady dressed in black glide along the passages, and even heard the rustle of her dress.
At Green Head formerly lived Robert Nutter, whom Ann Whittle, otherwise "Old Chattox", was accused of having bewitched to death "by devilish practices and hellish means." She suffered death at Lancaster on this charge.
A short distance from here, in a clough called the "Boggart Hole," there was found some years ago an interesting relic of these superstitious times, namely, a bottle filled with pins, which had doubtless been buried with some weird rite in the olden days to work some person "meikle woe."
