Express and Advertiser December 23, 1905 BRIERCLIFFE. YOUTH IN TROUBLE-On Wednesday, at the Colne County Police Court, John Richard Waterworth, a youth, of Briercliffe, was charged with stealing two pigeons, valued at 50s., the property of Amos Duerden and Wilfred Kippax, of Briercliffe.-Mr. D. Smith (of Mr. Bracewell’s office, Colne) appeared to prosecute, and Mr. Lloyd (of Mr. Waddington’s office) represented prisoner.-Amos Duerden, weaver, 73, Burnley road, Briercliffe, stated that on the 14th inst. he visited a wooden cote in a field at Beth Pasture Farm, Brierfield, where he kept pigeons, and he missed two. He also found that cote had been broken open. The pigeons produced were his property. On the 15th December he went with D.O. Shutt, of the Burnley police force, to a farm belonging to prisoner’s father, and there found the birds. When questioned about them prisoner replied, “I bought them, and have had them a month.” – Prisoner pleaded guilty, and Mr. Lloyd stated that he had been before the court at Burnley last Saturday for a similar offence, and had been treated as a first offender. He said at Burnley that he bought the pigeons, and repeated this statement in the present case; but he was not of strong intellect. He was the son of a respectable man. Mr. Carr, the police court missioner, had undertaken to look after prisoner, and his father had also promised to do his best to improve him.-Prisoner was bound over to come up for judgment when called upon. |
