Mel, Kris emailed me a copy of the class photo. Stephanie said she would send a photo of the school later. Thanks, it's great to have these photos.

Look at the lovely old desks with inkwells, and those little round chairs. I can actually remember my first day at school, Mum took me into the classroom and sat me in one of those round chairs, then went to talk to the teacher, I was so busy looking around that I did'nt notice me Mum leaving the classroom, when I looked round she had gone, I remember so well the feeling, I howled, I was only 4.

It's lovely to see those photos. We had the little white inkwells in the corner of the desks. I haven't seen any of the pink blotting paper for years.

I went to a church school and after prayers each morning the teacher would check for clean shoes/clogs, and also that everyone had a handkerchief. Most boys didn't. Sounds archaic, doesn't it, but it really wasn't all that long ago.

At the end of every school day we had to put our chairs on the desks, stand there with our eye's closed and our hands together and say our little prayer, which was;

Now the day is over,
night is drawing nigh,
shadows of the evening,
steal across the sky.
Amen

Stephanie,

that's a lovely memory - I wonder if you said (or sang) any more of it:

1. Now the day is over, night is drawing nigh;
shadows of the evening steal across the sky.

2. Jesus, give the weary calm and sweet repose;
With Thy tend'rest blessing may our eyelids close.

3. Grant to little children visions bright of Thee;
Guard the sailors tossing on the deep blue sea.

4. Thro' the long night watches, may Thine angels spread
their white wings above me, watching 'round my bed.

5. When the morning wakens, then may I arise
pure and fresh and sinless in Thy holy eyes.

I found this by Googling (of course) and there are longer versions too.

Charon

That was lovely, I did'nt know the rest of the verses, we only sang the first one. I can still sing it now, it is as clear as if it was yesterday.
I can remember the house teams we had for Abel Street school as well, the last one I was in was Scott, which was green, there also was Shackleton which was blue, Livingston was red, Grenfell was yellow, I think they were all named after explorers.

We had rivers - Trent (green), Dove (red?), Dane (yellow?) & Manifold (blue).

I was in Trent and still have my prefect and vice captain badges. No idea how I got either! I also still have the school photo with me wearing them. I have it so that mum cannot show it to anyone.

We also sang a short prayer at the end of the school day, with hands together and eyes closed:

Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the food we eat,
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you, God, for everything.

We used to do that one before we had our dinners, cant remember if it was at big school or little school though. At big school our house teams were named after famous women (girls only school)
Bronte (red) which I was prefect in.
Nightingale (yellow)
Fry (green)
Currie (blue)
