Post subject:  Why did they move?

My ancestor, Richard LAMBERT, lived in the Craven area of Yorkshire till about 1825, as had his father's ancestors for several generations. My understanding is that they were cattle and horse breeders. In about 1825, Richard appears to have sold his property in Craven and removed his family to Briercliffe. Any opinions about why he would have done that? I'm wondering about events such as the hoof and mouth epidemic that swept through the UK cattle farms just a few years ago. Did anything similar happen in the 1820s?

Second question: What would he likely have done to make a living in Briercliffe?

Thanks,

Venitar

Welcome to the site Venitar.

Reasons for move...not a clue I'm afraid.

Occupation after move...if they were alive for the 1841 census then that should give the answers but I think the most common occupations in and around Briercliffe at the time were Ag lab & hand loom weaver. I think stone mason was also a popular occupation.

Rex might have more ideas about the occupations?

Thanks for the ideas. By 1841 Richard had died and his widow and children had emigrated to America, so they aren't in the 1841 census, unfortunately. I've tried to find a probate record for him, but no luck so far.

Isn't that just typical!
Do you know where they lived in Briercliffe?

When Richard's son, Joseph, was born in 1826, they lived in Marsden Heights.

Hi Venitar,
you might find this site interesting http://www.edmondson.org.uk/briercliffe/john.html
John Edmondson had two stallions in Briercliffe in the 1800's. There is an interesting few lines about his early years.
"He developed a love of horses at this time and spent days at a time riding the wild moors, where he made friends with the gypsies who camped there every year in the spring time. He learned from them of their medicines and helped in collecting the herbs and flowers which were used in preparations and it was there that he first became interested in the breeding of horses."

This was in the early 1800's, I wonder if your Lamberts had anything to do with the gypsies?

Marsden Heights is at the top of Kings Causeway. No far from the Briercliffe boundary. You can see it here http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=Kings+ ... %20BB9%205

Thanks, Gloria. I'll check out the websites. As far as I know, the Lamberts didn't have any connections with gypsies. The truth is, I really don't know much about the Lamberts at all except names, dates, places, and a few rumors. Lately I've been learning new things regularly, mostly things that I would never have guessed! Thank heaven for people who are willing to share info.

Just another thought, when were Richard's children born? The Parish Registers (assuming you can find the relevant entries) should reveal fathers occupation.

Hi Venita,

I expect you've seen the Lambert baptisms in the Church Records section of the main Briercliffe Society site, but just in case you haven't........ I see there are four baptisms at Haggate of Lambert children from Gargrave in Craven between 1814 and 1824. Could they be related to your Lamberts?

Well spotted Charon. There's also a burial for a Ritchard Lambert (not my spelling) 25th Dec 1833 Haggate Baptist Chapel.

:D Yes, that's my family! I checked the Family History Library Catalog to see if there was a film available for Haggate's records, hoping there would be more information in the actual church records. There is not a filmstrip, but there are a couple of fiche which they don't lend. So, I'll be making a trip to Salt Lake tomorrow. Luckily, it's just an hour's drive for me.

Thanks for looking them up for me!!

Venita,

Great that those are your people! It looks as if Richard must have had some connection with Briercliffe more than ten years before he moved there - he'd have to be a very determined particular kind of Baptist if religion was the only reason for bringing his children all the way from Gargrave to be baptised! Of course, that still doesn't answer your question.

I noticed in the list of Haggate baptisms that there's another Lambert family, Joseph and Hannah of "Baraford". They name a child Richard, and one of Richard and Patience's children is named Hannah - which may or may not tell us something.
