Did anyone watch the splendid programme on BBC 4 at 9pm last night. It was called Hop, Skip and Jump:The Story Of Children at Play. It was part one last night and part two next week, it was old films of kids playing all the games that were popular of the day, it brought back so many memories, I will definately be watching part two, I was on the lookout for any or myself or my mates, they interviewed one woman about her memories who lived in Colne. Try to watch it if you can, the older end of us will find it notalgic and the younger end will see how we used to play out from dawn til dusk, no video games or computers for us then.

We watched the first one today. I think they were a bit out with the years that some of these games stopped. I was born in the early 70's and remember many of the games that were featured. I wasn't so sure about some of the rhymes though.
We started to watch ppart 2 but I fell asleep! In my defence, I was up very early

Following on in this theme: can anyone remember any of the rhyming games which we used to chant while throwing 2-balls at a wall? Trying to teach my granddaughter some outdoor 'alone' games...but I can't remember the words.
Perhaps ther's a book somewhere?...I have Googled in vain!

Nebuchadnezzar the king of the jews,
bought his wife a pair of shoes,
when the shoes began to wear,
Nebuchadnezzar began to swear,
when the swearing began to stop,
Nebuchadnezzar began to shop,
when the shop began to sell,
Nebuchadnezzar began to spell
N E B U C H A D N E Z Z A R

That brought back memories, I know there are loads more.

As I read it outloud I had a flashback!! I used to be bloody good at 2-balls! Came from being an only child, methinks!! Got pretty fancy..bouncing the balls under the legs...doing a twirl or two...rebounding from ground to wall...
Thanks!

I used to like playing paper chase. They still play it these days but it's called a treasure hunt now.

And my fondest memories are going wooding with the local kids just before November 5th ... Bonfire night. We used to set off middle morning with jam butties and pop. We headed down Barden lane turning left at the bottom to the seven hills and Padiham stepping stones.

We never seem to bring any wood back but boy we had a good time trying.

I don't think homemade bonfires are allowed these days are they?
