I think I've tracked John back through the earlier censuses. He was a widower in 1891 & 1881 so if it's the same man, it looks as if he remarried between 1891 & 1901. I looked for marriages of a John Cooper in Staffordshire between those dates & couldn't find one to a Ruth. There was one to a Lucy Purchase but when I looked for her on the censuses she didn't seem to fit. A mystery.

If they had lodged together before then it could easily be him, and, the enumerator could have presumed they were man and wife. I know how Mel likes her paper trails so she will have to hunt for one. :lol: :lol: :lol: I think it is them.
