I'm looking at a Rawson family in Briercliffe. Susannah Rawson married Robert Barker, I'm looking for where she was before marriage.

This is her in 1861

I'm almost certain that this would be her in 1851 but then, when looking at 1841, Mary appears to be missing?

No I think you are right,but I have had a good look for her and cannot see her. There is one Mary Rawson living at Pighole Mill who is about the right age, and it isn't miles away, but she does appear to belong to the family there.
At grandparents possibly? What was the mother's (Mary) maiden name?

Could they have got her age wrong in the 1851, and therefore she wasn't even born when the 1841 census was taken. There is a Mary Rawson born Dec qtr 1841--could this be her???? Just thinking aloud.

I don't know mothers maiden name. I haven't yet looked for the marriage.

What has me thinking is that Susannah wasn't all that old in 1851 to get the age so wrong? Or is 1841 wrong? Did they round her age up in 1841 in the same way as they do the adults even though under 15's should show their actual age?

Also Gloria, your theory is something else I have considered.

I have found ages rounded both up and down in the 1841 including children.
There is a Susannah born 1840 Burnley which would tie in with the other censuses. That doesn't help with Mary though.
Have you seen this one in 1861, could be the same family, that would make her born after 1841.

It's Susannah I am interested in mostly. I'm not convinced by this 1841 result though. I can't believe they would round a 1 year old up to 5.

I have just had a walk through the 1861 census where Susannah is living in Cockden with hubby, two pages further on is her mother as a widow.

There are two births which could be her, have you sent for the cert?

Susannah Rawson 1838 Apr-May-Jun Burnley Lancashire

Susannah Rawson 1840 Jan-Feb-Mar Burnley Lancashire

Either one wouldn't make her 5yo in 1841, but either could be rounded up. I think the 1841 needs to be looked at with a bit of imagination.

More than likely to be their grave, especially when she is a widow in 1861.

Yup, a soft mick acknowledger sitting here. At home there were all sorts of things that we had more of than soft mick had. Generally not the things that you wanted though.
