My husband's grandmother was Gladys Baxter. My husband was told by his father that there is a Baxter and McDonald link believed to be Scottish. I have since discovered that Gladys was born illegitimate to Elizabeth Baxter in Oldham Union Workhouse in 1904. I now strongly believe that Elizabeth is in fact William Baxter and Maria Airey’s daughter born 1871. William was the son of John and Sarah (McDonald) . Elizabeth married a James Edward Tattersall in 1909 in Oldham. The father is named as William Baxter occup nail maker. When James dies he leaves his money to Gladys Bennett married (nee Baxter) Hence husband’s grandmother The Ernest Baxter that you mention later lived in Oldham and is burried there. He had a wife named Doris. As there is no sign of Gladys or 1911 census I believe this to still be a mystery . James Tattersall and Elizabeth (nee Baxter) are living in Oldham in 1911. Elizabeth dies in 1939 unfortunately before the register however James is still living in Oldham 89 West Street. Gladys has school records in 1914 Again in Oldham whereby either the father or guardian is given as James. |
