My husband's grandmother was Gladys Baxter. My husband was told by his father that there is a Baxter and McDonald link believed to be Scottish. I have since discovered that Gladys was born illegitimate to Elizabeth Baxter in Oldham Union Workhouse in 1904. The Ernest Baxter that you mention later lived in Oldham and is hurried there. He had a wife named Doris. As there is no sign of Gladys or Elizabeth in 1911 census I believed them to have left Oldham, however Gladys has school records in 1914 whereby either the father or guardian in given as James.
