Betty Hirst was married to Edmund Hirst who died on March 1st 1877 aged only 37 yrs. Read his Headstone in the Haggate graves (under WHITTAKER - Section C Grave 200) The babies buried are Edmund and Betty's grand children.

Edmund was the son of James Hirst and Mary Shackleton and they lived at Banks farm Briercliffe. See 1841 Census under name Hurst.

Edmund's brother Henry was my great granddad

I hope Sue picks up on this topic, Martha was her Great? Grandmother.
Jack, have you seen all the pictures of Martha on the main site? There are several in 'The Halstead Collection'

Yes....so my great-great-grandfather, Edmund Hirst, was brother to Jackh....which would make him a cousin to my dad, Jack Halstead, twice removed? Or thrice? Cannot get that straight .
Line from Edmund would be:
Edmund Hirst m Betty Brierley
daughter Martha m. John Robert Halstead
their son James m Esther Gudgeon
their son, Jack Halstead , is my dad (now aged 91)

Thanks, David...certainly was a big help! Another member, living in Australia, and myself appear to be fourth cousins. If I've done this correctly, his third-greatgrandfather and mine were brothers....Hirst.
Yay!!
It's like Christmas morning!

Henry Hirst, Edmund's brother is my Great, Great Grandfather. It has been great to discover a fourth cousin in Canada through this wonderful site. One of Henry's sons James (born in 1872) married Elizabeth Hebden and they had 5 children, Harry, John, Jane, Mary and Edith. John died in 1914 and is buried at Haggate Baptist Church. The rest of the family emigrated to Australia in the 1920s with most settling in Adelaide.
Harry was my Grandfather.

Is there a possibility of obtaining higher resolution photos of the gravestones of Henry and Edmund Hirst?

I don't think that the photos are ones I have taken. If you do not have the ones Lyndon wants let me know and I can easily pop up and take new ones if you give me a clue where they are in the graveyard.

OK, thanks David, I think they are what my Dad took on one of the early trips last year. Until I see which stones, I can't be 100% sure. I think though, that it will be the section near to where your mate with the demo pics lives. Watch this space, I will let you know soon as.

Hey, Lyndon
Don't know if you noticed...or maybe I mentioned it in a pm ...but there are some photos of Martha Hirst and her mother Betty Brierley in the Halstead Collection on the Photo Archives. I wish I had one of Edmund...

Sue, Its a wonderful collection of photos and nice to see some of Martha Hirst and her mother Betty Brierley. I'm afraid my photo collection doesn't go back that far. I have a few of James Hirst, Henry's son but they date from the 1920s when they came to Australia.
