These are the census results for Henry Meigh. Can anyone find him in 1861 please? His wife has been listed as all sorts....marriage name being Porrowse Barker. I'm not interested in her at this stage. I believe he will be in Staffordshire/Stoke on Trent in 1861. He possibly has a sister, Leah and his mother could be named Caroline. This is info from the 1851 census but I'm not 100% confident that this is correct without seeing an 1861 return. There is another Henry Meigh floating around Staffordshire who is about 4 years younger than this one. He was born Hanley. 1871 RG10/2089 Folio: 85 Page: 33 Lear's Yard, St Mary Church, Devonshire MEIGH, Henry Head M 23 1848 Staffordshire MEIGH, Suprous Wife F 24 1847 Staffordshire MEIGH, Ann Daughter F 1 1870 Staffordshire 1881 RG11/2745 Folio: 74 Page: 9 Meir Lane, Caverswall MEIGH, Henry Head Married M 33 1848 Earthenware Turner Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Luphorious Wife Married F 34 1847 Earthenware Lathe Turner Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Ann Daughter Single F 11 1870 Scholar Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Henry Son Single M 9 1872 Scholar Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Eli Son Single M 4 1877 Scholar Fenton, Staffordshire 1891 RG12/2191 Folio: 78 Page: 33 Meir Lane, Caverswall MEIGH, Henry Head Married M 43 1848 Potters Turner Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Zipirious Wife Married F 44 1847 Potters Handler Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Anne Daughter Single F 21 1870 At Home Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Henry Son Single M 19 1872 Potters Turner Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Eli Son M 14 1877 Potters Handler Hanley, Staffordshire MEIGH, Florence Daughter F 9 1882 Scholar Caverswall, Staffordshire, Meir MEIGH, Sarah Anne Daughter F 7 1884 Scholar Caverswall, Staffordshire, Meir MEIGH, Ernest Son M 5 1886 Scholar Caverswall, Staffordshire, Meir MEIGH, Albert Son M 3 1888 Caverswall, Staffordshire, Meir MEIGH, Thomas Wm Son M 0 (8M) 1891 Caverswall, Staffordshire, Meir 1901 RG13/ 2609 Folio: 34 Page: 11 80, Fielding Street, Stoke Upon Trent MEIGH, Henry Head Married M 52 1849 Potters Turner Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Zippariois Mother F 53 1848 Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Henry Son Single M 28 1873 Potter's Turner Fenton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Florence Daughter Single F 20 1881 Potter's Handler Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Sarah A Daughter Single F 18 1883 Potter's Handler Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Ernest Son M 15 1886 Potter's Presser Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Albert Son M 13 1888 Potter's Handle Maker Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Thomas W Son M 10 1891 Longton, Staffordshire MEIGH, Bertha Grand Daughter F 3 1898 Fenton, Staffordshire |

This is actually for a friend of mine. He subscribes to Ancestry. We sat together at the office yesterday looking for him....me on FMP and him on Ancestry. What I suspect has happened, he was illegitimate (or so it appears if the 1851 census is correct) and his mum married and they used the new name on the 1861 census either intentionally or accidentally as sometimes happened. I can't find a marriage that would tally though. Maybe the mum died? I did find Henry's baptism and marriage on Familysearch....there's a thought - there was a fathers name on that. Maybe Paul will find them armed with that bit of info? I'll have another look tonight |

Hi Mel, There are a handful of family trees on ancestry for Caroline Meigh and children Leah and Henry. They have Caroline marrying in 1860 to a Thomas Birch. There is a Caroline Birch on the 1871 census aged 49 born Longton and living in Longton, Stoke on Trent with a 19 year old daughter Sarah A Meigh, both their occupations are (potter) cup handler. This seems to match the 1851 census. It doesn`t look as though anyone has found them in the 1861 census. They also have Caroline marrying a Herbert Anderson in the Oct. 1871 and then dying in 1877, but it too is unconfirmed. Just thought I would mention it. Regards, Mo |

Thanks Mo, I'll pass that info to Paul - his own tree is on Ancestry. He's quite new to research and has tripped up here and there. Thanks again |

I had another look at this today - I like a good mystery ![]() No joy - even searching for Caroline and/ or Henry with no surnamw A couple of incidental things tho ( that you might even already have worked out) I think it highly likely that Henry had a twin, Emily. Staffs bmd show two Meigh children, mother's maiden name Meigh, b 1847. The reference numbers are consecutive. I looks like Emily died before she was 1. !861 shows a Leah Meigh, daur, but if you look at the census image, you'll see the age had been moved from the male column to the female one. There's a Meigh child with the weird name of Shei, mother's maiden name Meigh. Ancestry has a phot of the birth cert, showing that it was a male. I*t's difficult to tell, but it's possible the name was Lhei (still weird). I wonder whether that's the child shown as Leah on teh 1861 census. There are loads of Meigh children on Staffs bmd with a mother maiden name of Meigh. She must have been a Leaver in another life ![]() |
