I am doing a bit of research for someone. I have found the family on various census, however, the 1891 and 1901 are driving me nuts. There are children that don't appear on both. I have searched for births/deaths. Found most births but no deaths. the census is as follows...

1891
RG12/3861 folio ? pg 30
Dodsworth St, Mexborough
Albert Smalley, Head, M, 32, Waggonmaker, b.Hunslet
Phoebe, Wife, M, 32, b.Mexbro
John Wm, Son, S, 9, Scholar, b.Mexbro
Charles, Son, S, 8, Scholar, Mexbro
Herbert, Son, S, 3, b.Balby
Leonard, Son, S, 1, b.Mexbro
Louisa, Dau, S, 5, b.Mexbro
Annie Guthrie?, Servant, S, 19, General Servant, b.Yorks Wheatley

1901
RG13/4408 folio 142 pg 1
Lilian Ter., Mexbrough, Yorkshire
Albert Smalley, head, M, 39, Colliery Wagon Agent, b.Hunslet
Phoebe, Wife, M, 39, b.Hunslet
John W, Son, S, 19, Colliery Tinker Cutter?, b. Hunslet
Louisa, Dau, S, 15, b.Hunslet
Charles H, Son, S, 18, Colliery Tinker Cutter?, b.Hunslet
Harold P, Son, S, 13, Colliery labourer above ground, b.Dalby?
Levi, Son, 6, b.Mexbro
Clarence, Son, 4, b.Mexbro
Beatrice, Dau, 2, b.Mexbro (Beatrice spelt wrong on this census)

I think Herbert in 1891 is Harold in 1901. There is a Harold birth in the relevant year but no Herbert. I cannot find another Herbert and there are no deaths for either.
My other curiosity is Leonard who appears in 1891 but not 1901. I cannot find a birth or a death for him.

Can anyone else do any better? Gloria... I know you like a challenge.
Finding this won't move the tree in any direction but it just keeps it neat :)

I think you are right with the Harold/Herbert being the same person.
This is worth a look at for Leonard, it is registered at Sheffield which isn't a long way from Mexborough.
Leonard James Smellie
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1890
Year of Registration: 1890
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at Death: 0
District: Sheffield
County: South Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume: 9c
Page: 387
I have looked everywhere, with allsorts of spellings but cannot come up with a birth.

Mel, depending what lengths you want to go to, you might get something from the mexborough burial records. Apparently Mexborough comes under Doncaster & there's a list of available records at

Thank you Maureen. The district is a new one on me for research. I will now impress my friend with some new found knowledge thanks to you.
