I'm trying to find out who lived at Batty Hole in 1871, but I can't find it on the census. Ive been through every page on the returns for district numbers 48 (Briercliffe) 47 & 49 (Briercliffe & Extwistle) but not found it.
Has anybody got any suggestions where I'll find it, or what other properties were nearby?

Think that the nearest property to Batty Hole was Ingham's Maureen

Thanks David. Don't remember seeing that on any of them either. I guess I'll have to try looking through the burnley returns and see what comes up.

Just had a look on the old map in Roger's book and the other two nearest properties were Shore's Hey and Shay Lane.

Went for a walk this afternoon and was talking to the lady who lives at Batty Hole,she has lived there for 27 years.Before that it was the Starkies the father of Alan who now has Lea Green Farm at Roggerham. The lady said that Mrs Starkie used to do teas at Batty Hole and made more money out of that than farming.
Also if you read Rogers book A Lancashire Township he mentions Batty Hole as once being a fruit farm owned by the North of England Preserve Co. a subsidiary of the jam making firm Hartley's.Gooseberries,Rhubarb and rasberries were grown at Batty Hole from the late 19th century to the outbreak of the first world war.

Edit-It was 1885 when the Preserve Co,owned Batty Hole

Batty Hole is not named in the Census until 1891 when my Great Grand Fether Charles Graves lived there.

In 1871 I would think Batty Hole was one of the four farms on Blackhouse Lane.
Living there were:
Benjamin Stanworth farmer of 31 acres
Thomas Walton farmer of 16 acres
Bannister Nutter farmer of 7 acres
Christopher Edmundson farmer of

I suspect Batty Hole was the last of these four, or it could be the other way round. at least you have some names to look up.

Christopher Edmundson in 1891 was living at Hanson's Tenement age 71, he may have sold out to Hartley's Jam'

Well that opened my eyes. For some reason I thought Batty Hole was near to Proctor Cote - on Extwistle Hall side of the lane that goes to Worsthorne.
I had a look here http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/images/assets/Image_901.jpg and realise now that it's not! I will have to study harder!

I return to comment on Batty Hall.

After further searches I find that Batty Hall is named in the 1841 Census.

John Leaver (age 39) and his family, a total of 5, lived there together with, I assume his brother, James Leaver (32).

Black House Lane came before Batty Hall on the Census list and there were 7 families living there, a total of 32 people.

The Leaver's lived on farms on this lane until after 1861, but by 1871 they had gone, as had all the named families of 1841.

I notice Batty Hall, on my last comment, should should be a Hole.

Shame Kris is away, I think those are his Leavers.

We must have a connection Maureen, as I connect with Kris through James Kippax who married as his second wife Elizabeth (Betty) Leaver. In 1881 census they were living in Blackhouse Lane. I am descended from James and his first wife Mary. In the census it is the only property down there un-named with 11 acres and Batty Hole had I think 10, the rest are down as having 17 and 60, which Batty Hole certainly didn't. I have always thought they lived there.
We went to view it prior to the auction donkeys years ago and I loved it, got annoyed at everyone trouping around it, just wanted to sit down in it. The couple who got it were having it come hell or high water and we couldn't afford to compete with them then. I now know why I loved it so much.

Just been looking on the 1881 census at Shorey Hey and notice that at 38 Backhouse Lane which I think would be Inghams there was-

Peter Leaver Head age 49 farmer of 17 acres and stone quarryman
Grace Leaver wife aged 43
Elizabeth Leaver Daughter aged 20 Servant

Then at 39 Backhouse Lane there was a Betty Leaver widow aged 72??? House Helper

And finally at 40 Backhouse Lane -(Batty Hole?????)
Christopher Edmondson head aged 61 farmer of 60 acres(widower?)
Jane Edmondson Daughter aged 21 housekeeper
Rosemary Edmondson Daughteraged 19 cotton weaver

David, on the 1881 the numbers are of the transcription not the number in Backhouse Lane. I think it would be Ingham House with 17 acres as we went to that auction as well a few years before Batty Hole.

Yeah I realise that Gloria,I was just sort of working my way down the lane from the top.Shorey Lane was listed as No 37 which I know is higher up the lane than Inghams which is next property down the lane and then Batty Hole.
