As many will know there was a strong movement amongst working class women in the north of England mainly, for female suffrage. The women concerned were know as 'suffragists' rather than suffragettes, and perhaps had limited contact with the middle class Pankhurts etc. See

1. 'One hand tied behind us', (I can't remember the authors), Virago Press.

2. 'The life and times of a respectable rebel', by Jill Liddington, also Virago Press. This is about Selina Cooper, a rather neglected daughter of Nelson and Brierfield. She was prominent in other ways in local life in the earlier part of last century, for instance as a JP.

Both an excellent read.

Emmeline Pankhurst's foundation of the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903 marked the start of a radical new phase in the fight to win the right to vote for British women. The campaign would send shock waves throughout the polite society of the Edwardian drawing room and provoke civil disobedience on a massive scale.

In this collection of programmes we hear from those women whose part in the struggle would finally culminate in the 1918 Representation of the People Act and the election of the first woman MP
