My favourite genre - !
I have now managed to buy used novels by Lee Smith which have been recommended by other members here. Looking forward to reading them. For those who like this kind of book, let me recommend one of my favourites:
"Crimson Petal and the White" by Michel Faber.
What I loved about this book was the realism....The characters were flawed and scarred...in everyway....I could almost smell the lack of hygiene!! A gripping tale indeed. A kind of cross between Austen and Dickens....
Happy reading! :D

I keep saying I am going to venture away form murder mysteries but never do. One of these days I will! I seem to read so few novels lately.

It's the great escape for me! I do like mysteries and forensic stuff too, but novels with a well researched historical background really interest me.
If anyone shows interest in this thread, there are others which I really liked and would recommend. 8)

I’m a huge fan of the Harry Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. http://www.harryflashman.org/flashypapers.htm

For those of you who recommended Lee Smith's books...I have just finished "Fair and Tender Ladies"....a story of 4 generations of an Appalachian family as told by feisty Ivy in her letters to friends and family. Couldn't put it down...fascinating! Even more fascinating because of my personal experiences travelling and meeting folk from The Smoky Mountains and the rural Virginian areas where the poverty and lack of education is still rife.
I also got "On Agate Hill" which I will now curl up with!!

Kris....I think you might find "Three Day Road" by Joseph Boyden very interesting...story of 2 Canadian Indians from very traditional and remote reservations going off to WW1, where their skills as hunters and marksmen got them reputations as heroes. It is a novel...but I believe it echoes many real-life stories of these aboriginal and undersung warriors of the time.

A sequal to this prize-winning book "Through Black Spruce" is about the same family a generation later.

Great reads!!
