This is the title of a book published in 1985 by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments of England (RCHM). Large softback. The author is Sarah PEARSON. The title is a little misleading, as it only covers 'our' area of NE Lancs, that is Burnley, Colne (no Nelson then !), Padiham, the Pendleside villages (old Pendle Forest), and the townships such as Briercliffe adjoining the Yorkshire border. It can be found now and then on ebay, Abebooks, and the like. I have glanced at it in libraries now and then, but recently I purchased one at a good price. (Expect to pay £15 to say £35). The author is actually Sarah PEARSON. Typically I think RCHM books are concerned more or less totally with the technical architectural details of the area and period of study. This book certainly does that, but the author also devotes attention to why the houses were built where and when they were, and by whom, and she discusses agricultural developments and the increasing importance of textiles during the period. Lots to learn then, with detailed descriptions of many surviving houses in the area, along with their history, occupiers, etc. There is an interesting discussion ongoing through the book about the relative importance of the only two towns Burnley and Colne. (Though urban houses such as inns aren't dealt with) (Padiham isn't regarded as a town !). We all know that Burnley is bigger than Colne, and has been ever since the explosion of factories from say 1840. Colne though is often held to be more important in much earlier times. PEARSON however asserts that Burnley was the leading town up to around the early 17th century. Well worth a few bob. Rex |

I think I have a copy of this on the shelf at home....will have to take another look at it when I get home. |
