No I'm not offering, does anyone else remember Cece's wonderful stuff?

Me, it was absolutely lovely, never been any like it. We got it from the little shop opposite the Tivoli on Colne Rd.

I know Cece's icecream was special, but why is this item in Places of Worship?

When I was 8 or 9, around 1950, my grandma would sometimes take me from her home in St Anne's on the Ribble express bus to Burnley to visit my cousins. On the way back, if we were in good time at the bus station (at the Cattlemarket?), we'd have a Cece's icecream from their tricycle there. It certainly had a distinctive flavour - but those were the days of shortages and rationing, and who knows what went into the mix? Anyway, it was a real treat: and so was the bus ride, especially if we could get the front seats, beside the driver, in one of Ribble's new Leyland Royal Tiger express coaches!

We bought Cece's ice cream in Accrington, in the Market Hall, I think. It was always for a special treat and was wonderful. My mum did a lot of shopping in the Market Hall and the outdoor covered market. We knew the names of all the people whose stalls we visited regularly. Before the days of Tesco of course.

We also bought ice cream from the dairy. I would take along a pint pot and Amy in the dairy would scoop ice cream in until it was full. I would hurry back with it. Yes, it was quite a long time ago!

The bus station was on the cattle market in Burnley. We used to take the bus there and then walk to visit my Grannie and aunties in Stoneyholme.

Does anyone remember buying ice cream at the little shop at the top of Sandy Lane on the way to the top of Noggarth on the way to Barley or Roughlee from Wheatley Lane ? It was wonderful : of course whichever way you approached, you had just walked up a hill !

Remember too wafers (anywhere), always a bad move on a warm day ?!

Oh yes Rex, remember it well, after a trip to Roughlee, where my friend and I caught minnows and brought them home, ( where of course they expired) we usually collected our ice cream from the place you mentioned. Why does the mention of food, Burnleys games and quaint old sayings, start me off?

I feel like 'cheese at fourpence today' maybe a cold coming on.

My grandmother used to refer to small things atop large things as, piano drum, THATS WHAT I THOUGHT SHE SAID, for a long time, then discovered it was pea on a drum.
Where on earth does 'browned off' come from tho?

Think it's from 14th centuary English origin, meaning 'fed up', originating from a 'brown study', brown being dark and study, possibly pondering, therefore you get dark thoughts.... fed up, cheesed off, browned off.

Best ice cream in the world. When the owner either died or sold up he took his recipe with him. Pity !

Ceces Ice Cream was the best ever, Aunt Evelyn used to be on the Cattle Market & every time I went to see her I used to get a tub of ice cream[you got more than a cornet].

There has never been anything to touch it---lovely stuff. Probably wouldn't be allowed to make it nowadays, anything tasting so good would be full of stuff you shouldn't eat.....eggs and cream, no additives, no preservatives, no e-this and e-that

Having grown up in Colne, the local ice creams I remember were made by Slater's and Dixon's. (I also, remember preferring Wall's - which suggests my gastronomic tastebuds still had some way to develop!).

I don't know what brand of ice cream it was, but I remember my mother bringing me ice cream as a treat when I had my tonsils out (in a hospital annexe somewhere towards Fence I think) when I was seven. The sad thing was that the nurse took the ice crea away, saying 'You don't want to eat this now, while your Mummy is here. I'll save it for later'. When it reappeared it had totally melted into a lumpy pool on a plate. Not surprising I refused to eat it - only to see it then given to the child in the next bed, who was clearly less fussy!

Another of my early memories on the ice cream theme was of playing with an "ice cream sandwich maker" in the sandpit in the baby class at Lord Street School.
